CGT Leadership to Discuss General Strike

Buenos Aires, Feb 16 (NA) — The leadership of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) will meet this Monday to discuss the possibility of calling a general strike for next week, in clear disagreement with the possible sanction of the Labor Reform, which will begin to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies, after the half sanction in the Senate. The co-chairs of the CGT, Octavio Argüello (Truckers), Jorge Sola (Insurance) and Cristian Jerónimo (glass workers), decided to hold a meeting virtually starting at 11 am. One of the co-chairs of the central, Cristian Jerónimo, had pointed out a few days ago that “the conditions are in place and collective consensuses have been generated to move towards a national strike”. In fact, many union leaders maintain that it is no longer enough to take to the streets to express their opposition to the government's project, and they have explicitly asked for tougher measures. Consequently, and according to what the Argentine News Agency learned, it is possible that the labor center will call for a strike on the day the reform debate begins in the lower house, probably Wednesday the 18th or Thursday the 19th.

Among the points that caused rejection by the CGT are the modifications on compensations, working hours, the right to strike and vacations, while the scheme for sick leave or non-work-related accidents also generated criticism.
